INGROWING, INVOLTED AND PAINFUL NAILS

A Personal Approach

Untitled

Your ingrowing nail might be curved into your toe or be swollen painful and red, a part of the nail will be cut out and you will feel the relief of the nail no longer digging in to your toe.

To help stop ingrown toenails:

  • Do not cut your toenails too short

  • Cut straight across the nail, not the edges

  • Do not wear shoes that are too tight or do not fit properly

  • Keep your feet clean and dry them thoroughly

CRACKED HEELS AND FISSURES

Stay on Top of Your Health

Cracked heel is a common foot problem. It occurs when dry, thick skin on the bottom of your heels cracks and splits.

In most cases, if the cracks are minor, it’s merely a nuisance and may be unattractive to look at, but if left untreated and the heel fissures become deeper, it can be painful to walk and may become infected.

The hard skin will be debrided with a scalpel and a heel balm will be applied.

FUNGAL NAIL

Quality Care

Fungal nail will not clear up on its own and fungal nail treatment will depend on the severity of the infection. Fungal nail infections can take long time to clear because your nail grows slowly, and you will only notice improvement once a new nail has grown through.

If your infection is mild

  • The nail can be burred down using a ceramic drill and a Anti-fungal topical oil can be applied daily – it can take up to 12 months to cure the infection and does not always work

  • Otherwise there is a cosmetic treatment that can be done to create a natural looking healthy nail this is called toenail reconstruction

DIABETIC FOOT CARE

A Personal Approach

Diabetic foot care is essential as diabetes can be dangerous to your feet—even a small cut can produce serious consequences. Diabetes may cause nerve damage that takes away the feeling in your feet. Diabetes may also reduce blood flow to the feet, making it harder to heal an injury or resist infection. Because of these problems, you may not notice a foreign object in your shoe. As a result, you could develop a blister or a sore. This could lead to an infection or a nonhealing wound that could put you at risk for an amputation.

To avoid serious foot problems that could result in losing a toe, foot or leg, follow these guidelines.

Inspect your feet daily. Check for cuts, blisters, redness, swelling or nail problems. Use a magnifying hand mirror to look at the bottom of your feet. Call your doctor if you notice anything.

Bathe feet in lukewarm, never hot, water. Keep your feet clean by washing them daily. Use only lukewarm water—the temperature you would use on a newborn baby.

Be gentle when bathing your feet. Wash them using a soft washcloth or sponge. Dry by blotting or patting and carefully dry between the toes.

Moisturize your feet but not between your toes. Use a moisturizer daily to keep dry skin from itching or cracking. But don't moisturize between the toes—that could encourage a fungal infection.

Cut nails carefully. Cut them straight across and file the edges. Don’t cut nails too short, as this could lead to ingrown toenails. If you have concerns about your nails, consult your doctor.

Never treat corns or calluses yourself. No “bathroom surgery” or medicated pads. Visit your doctor for appropriate treatment.

Wear clean, dry socks. Change them daily.

Consider socks made specifically for patients living with diabetes. These socks have extra cushioning, do not have elastic tops, are higher than the ankle and are made from fibers that wick moisture away from the skin.

Wear socks to bed. If your feet get cold at night, wear socks. Never use a heating pad or a hot water bottle.

Shake out your shoes and feel the inside before wearing. Remember, your feet may not be able to feel a pebble or other foreign object, so always inspect your shoes before putting them on.

Keep your feet warm and dry. Don’t let your feet get wet in snow or rain. Wear warm socks and shoes in winter.

Consider using an antiperspirant on the soles of your feet. This is helpful if you have excessive sweating of the feet.

Never walk barefoot. Not even at home! Always wear shoes or slippers. You could step on something and get a scratch or cut.

Take care of your diabetes. Keep your blood sugar levels under control.

Do not smoke. Smoking restricts blood flow in your feet.

Get periodic foot exams. Seeing your foot specialist on a regular basis can keep an eye out for any change for concern.

VERRUCA

Taking Care of You

What can I expect if I have Verrutop treatment?

Patients will always be booked in for an Initial Assessment. During this appointment the Specialist Foot Helath Practitioner will assess if you are suitable for Verrutop.

Verrutop is applied to verruca via a small capillary tube. The surface of the verruca is covered in the solution. The verruca may change colour and appear a white/yellow colour. Patients will be advised to apply surgical spirit to the verruca twice a day between treatments to aid the desiccation process. The process will be repeated every two weeks up to a maximum of six sessions. Usually takes 3 sessions.

CORNS AND CALLUS

Listening to Your Needs

Signs and symptoms of corns and calluses include a thick, rough area of skin

A hardened, raised bump

Tenderness or pain under the skin

Flaky, dry or waxy skin

Corns and calluses are not the same thing.

  • Corns

are smaller and deeper than calluses and have a hard center surrounded by swollen skin. They can be painful when pressed. Hard corns often form on the top of the toes or the outer edge of the small toe. Soft corns tend to form between the toes.

  • Calluses

are rarely painful and tend to develop on pressure spots, such as the heels, the balls of the feet. They may vary in size and shape and are often larger than corns a Foot Health Practitioner will

cut away some of the thickened skin using a sharp blade called a scalpel. This helps to relieve pressure on the tissue underneath.

Don't try to cut the corn or callus yourself.

THICKENED NAIL CUTTING/THINNING

Stay on Top of Your Health

Thickened toenails can be unsightly and in many cases painful and uncomfortable. A thickened toenail that is painful or uncomfortable is due to the pressure the thickened nail plate places on the nail bed beneath. The big toenail is most commonly affected. The main causes of thickened toenails are trauma and fungal nail infection. Treatment will be to cut and reduce thickness of the nails by using a ceramic burr to thin the nail plate down to make it comfortable again.
